These hands are way cooler than my own, but I’m going to use this photo for a Friday introductions because I’m digging this shoot recently :). My own hands are usually starting to get callouses from carrying my cameras at this point in the season, and are not nearly so photogenic :p.

I’m an entrepreneur at heart. I spend every waking moment thinking about this business, my clients, my photographs, and how to make it all better. I’m constantly coming up with new businesses to start, first and foremost being how to add more hours to a day. .
I started this business fresh out of university three years ago as a ‘break’ before going back to grad school. It quickly grew into working for myself full time, and haven’t looked at going back to school yet!
.
I have a little red dog named Kaya, who I talk about on almost all of my photo shoots. Thank goodness my clients are all dog lovers as well!
.
I’m always active, and almost never watch movies or tv shows because I just can’t sit through them. I would rather be outside doing something, and if that can’t happen then I’m constantly tidying and moving things around the kitchen. The one thing that gets me to sit still is reading, and I read absolutely anything and everything.
.
One of my biggest goals in life is to end up living by the ocean one day. Maybe I’ll build one of those houses that overhangs the water, and jump out for a paddle and a swim every morning. .

I was really lucky to get an entrepreneurship grant three years ago to get this business started when I was finishing university.
.
While the grant was helpful to update my gear, get insurance etc. the best part was that it came with a year of support from a small business and enterprise center. That meant having help with my accounting, marketing etc, which is truly what I credit to this little business growing so quickly.
.
I believe in entrepreneurship, and am always happy to share information and resources like what I received. So, if you’re thinking about stepping into running your own business, or just want to get something started on the side of your day job for now, always feel free to ask questions!

I’m listening to a webinar about the benefits of blogging as a small business. I’m always trying to stay inspired to keep blogging, and am curious about other people’s thoughts on the topic?

Personally I love blogs, especially posts that are filled with images and inspiration. I’m always information hungry, and often am drawn in to keep up with people’s recent work and the information they’re sharing that often doesn’t show up in any other platforms.

I’m so looking forward to taking the day off tomorrow, but I always try to jam the day with my schedule of the many things I want to do. I’m not complaining, there are just so many fun things to get to!

So far on the books is a morning of yoga, a swim in the bay, and a nice long trail run, then spending some hours in the garden re-seeding new crops (weeding of course), and making strawberry jam. Also to fit in where possible are choosing paint for the studio, reading, and groceries. .
What does everyone else try to fit into their days or weekends off?

Pro tip: how to capture joyful images. Choose the most joyful times of a wedding day to take these photographs!

I find that adding on a few extra minutes right after the first look, and right after the ceremony are the best times to capture huge smiles like these. This is when the bride and groom will be the most excited, their nerves will be gone, and everybody will be feeling high on that ‘just married’ or ‘holy crap we look fantastic’ vibe!
.
Also, almost every couple ever says ‘we’re so awkward in front of the camera’ (my own hand is mega raised 👋) and times like this create great opportunity for ‘unawkward’ candid photographs. Go with the mood and energy that is already present and don’t try to change it or contain it. Excitement and happiness looks great on everybody!

I’ve been lucky to work with Toronto based florist @leafandbloom on so many shoots, from real weddings, to styled shoots, to branding shoots, and I’m always blown away by her creativity, vision, and all around good person-ness. .
She put together this spectacular styled shoot last summer with all kinds of soft blue colours and creative bohemian touches, and of course this bouquet that absolutely stole my heart! Those trailing clematis vines are still so spectacular every time I look through these photographs!

Plus, she loves dogs, and I love just about anybody who is as dog crazy as I am. 😉

As a solo entrepreneur, it’s so important to be surrounded by other small business owners who are open in their business mindset and supportive of other business owners around them.

I find people either hold things close, be it their business ‘secrets’, clients, marketing efforts; OR they have a plentiful mindset and are open and giving about the way they work, referring clients, and generally supporting other business owners. Of course I believe in an open and giving business mindset, and am positive that everything comes back around!
•
If you’re looking at starting a small business, one of the best things I can recommend is finding other entrepreneurs who will support and mentor you through the first years. •
I also love communities like the @risingtidesociety and the new @the_atelier_collective conference I attended a few weeks ago with this lovely lady @melissa_twist_events who introduced me to this world of amazing female entrepreneurs from around Ontario!
